Milburn and Sheaer to be immortalised in bronze

Newcastle goalscoring legends Alan Shearer and Jackie Milburn are to be immortalised in bronze statues at St James' Park.

Renowned Northumberland sculptor Tom Maley is to produce statues of the two men who thrilled successive generations at St James' Park with their exploits.

Shearer, who retired at the end of last season, scored 206 goals for the club over 10 years, finally eclipsing Milburn's 200 in Glenn Roeder's first game in charge against Portsmouth in February last year, fittingly at the famous Gallowgate End.

The two figures, which will stand eight feet tall, will be unveiled at the south west corner of the stadium during the 2007-08 season.

Shearer said: 'I feel very honoured and very proud that these statues are going to be built.

'It is a great honour that I will be alongside a statue of the great Jackie Milburn. As a kid growing up in Newcastle, I heard so much about his superb career and what he achieved.

'Never in my wildest dreams did I think that one day I would be mentioned alongside him. I feel very honoured.'

The late Milburn, who will be forever remembered on Tyneside for his contribution to the club's three FA Cup triumphs during the 1950s, had been honoured by an earlier Maley statue which stood outside the stadium during the 1990s.

His son, Jack Junior, said: 'This is fantastic news, we are so thrilled. To have the statues of my father and Alan welcoming people to St James' Park will be wonderful.'

Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd is confident the statues will prove a major attraction with football fans from around the world.

He said: 'Jackie and Alan are two all-time greats and they will be immortalised outside St James' Park so their achievements are remembered forever.

'The names of Jackie Milburn and Alan Shearer are known throughout football and I think fans from near and far will come to St James' to view the statues.'
