Harry rails against Barton's Mendes 'stamp'

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has accused Manchester City's Joey Barton of deliberately stamping on Pedro Mendes.

Barton appeared lucky not to be sent off in Saturday's Premiership match at Fratton Park for the tackle which saw Mendes carried off on a stretcher.

Redknapp said: 'Barton meant to do it. Pedro was running the game before he got hurt and I thought it was a bad challenge. The ball had long gone when he was fouled.

'Anyone who says it was an accident needs their head examining. Barton deliberately did Pedro and deserved a red card.

'I am annoyed because Pedro is a good player and a good pro who does not go around kicking anybody. Now he has copped it twice. He is the one suffering again.'

It was feared Mendes had suffered a torn Achilles following the tackle but scans revealed only bruising around the tendon.

Mendes was knocked unconscious by then City defender Ben Thatcher's challenge at Eastlands in August.
