Redknapp seething after FA charge

Harry Redknapp is still furious over his treatment by referee Mike Dean after the Portsmouth boss was charged by the Football Association.

And Redknapp insists that if he is fined by the FA for his four-letter rant at the official he would rather give the money to charity.

Redknapp admits he lost his temper after seeing Manchester City's Joey Barton rake the heel of Pompey's Pedro Mendes and receive only a yellow card from Dean.

Now he has been charged with directing abusive and/or insulting words towards the referee during half time in Saturday's Fratton Park clash with Manchester City.

Redknapp said: 'I didn't even confront the referee in the tunnel. I waited by his door until everybody else had gone by.

'I did swear but the only other people there were Joe Jordan (Pompey coach) and the other officials. I spoke to the referee, but he did my head in with his attitude.'

The FA could fine or just warn Redknapp, who was sent to a seat in the stand for the second half, over his outburst - or even give him a touchline ban.

The 59-year-old said: 'I certainly didn't want to sit in the stand. I wanted to be down on the touchline with Tony Adams (assistant manager).

'It is nonsense if I get fined. I would rather give the money to (charity) Leukaemia Busters than to the FA again.'

Redknapp was last in trouble with the FA four years ago when he was fined £2,000 for remarks made to referee Andy D'Urso during a goalless draw at Wolves when the official booked eight players.

He has until February 27 to respond to the latest charge.

Meanwhile, Pedro Mendes looks likely to escape serious injury from the challenge by Barton after an initial scan on his Achilles showed only bad bruising of the tendons. Pompey hope he will be available for the next fixture - away to Blackburn a week on Sunday.

City continue to insist Barton's 'lack of intent to hurt' and the player has already apologised to Mendes who was left unconscious following a forearm challenge by Ben Thatcher at Eastlands earlier this season.

The FA could review taped evidence of the 41st-minute incident at Fratton Park even though Dean, in showing Barton a yellow card, is deemed to have dealt with the offence.

They invoked special powers to punish Thatcher who was suspended for eight matches even though referee Dermot Gallagher only booked him for the incident in August.

Also, the FA have been invited by Hampshire Police to study evidence the constabulary has gathered over a matter of 'some concern' after the match - thought to relate to abusive gestures being made to the fans.
