Relieved Lyon celebrate first win in 2007

LYON, France, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Olympique Lyon have got back to winning ways after a dismal start to the year and 10 days before facing AS Roma in the Champions League first knockout round.

The five-times French champions, who earned only two points from their previous five league outings, beat Lorient 1-0 with a goal from Fred on Saturday to record their first Ligue 1 victory of 2007.

'The most important thing was victory. We had to win even if our football was not scintillating. Success is good for confidence,' said skipper Claudio Cacapa, who started his first game since last August.

'We never had doubts because we knew what we were capable of,' the Brazilian added.

'We had to dig deep to win this match,' said Fred, who netted from 30 metres after volleying a pass from goalkeeper Gregory Coupet.

Club chairman Jean-Michel Aulas said he knew Lyon had the capacity to win matches.

'I think we are ready for the Roma game....I feel the players are stepping up a gear.'
