Red Bulls acquire Rimando from Real Salt Lake

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The New York Red Bulls acquired goalkeeper Nick Rimando from Real Salt Lake on Friday in return for future considerations.

The trade gives the Red Bulls three goalkeepers heading into their first full season under coach Bruce Arena, an indication New York might trade one of them.

Jon Conway finished last season as New York's starting goalkeeper, and the Red Bulls signed Ronald Waterreus, a backup goalkeeper with the Dutch national team, in late January.

A seven-year MLS veteran, Rimando was acquired by Real Salt Lake in December along with Freddy Adu from D.C. United. The 27-year-old was United's starter for his first four seasons in the Washington area, including 2004 when it won the MLS Cup.

However, Troy Perkins beat out Rimando for the No. 1 job this past season and went on to win the MLS goalkeeper of the year award after posting a league-leading 15 wins with eight shutouts.

Rimando has a 1.32 goals-against average and has started 145 regular-season MLS games.
