Trezeguet desperate to take on his fatherland

David Trezeguet will be hoping France coach Raymond Domenech shows some compassion tonight and gives him an opportunity to make a long-awaited appearance against Argentina.

Trezeguet's father is Argentinian and the Juventus striker grew up in the South American country before moving to France.

At the age of 17, Trezeguet made the decision to represent Les Bleus over his country of birth - a choice he says he does not regret.

He has been waiting for a chance to take on the Albiceleste, who have not played France since 1986, when Trezeguet was just eight.

It could happen tonight, but the strength in depth among France's strikers - and the fact he is only playing in the second tier of Italian football this season - means there is no certainty he will figure.

'I would like to be there, among those selected,' he said. 'But I'm trying to be realistic.

'Djibril [Cisse] is at Marseille, and has had matches. Nicolas [Anelka] has had the same thing in England. They have the same desire as me to start.

'To be honest, I have been thinking about this match since 1998. I am happy that I have the chance to play them.'

On his decision to choose France over Argentina, Trezeguet added: 'I haven't been Argentinian since I was 17. At that age, I had to make a choice. I am very proud to wear the Blue shirt and I have no regrets.'

Cisse is one of Trezeguet's rivals for a place alongside Thierry Henry up front.

But Cisse, back in the squad after an eight-month absence because of injury, believes it is he who is slightly behind in the pecking order.

'I would say Titi [Henry] is untouchable,' he said. 'Then there is David, who, in my opinion, and I might be mistaken, is ahead of us.'

Domenech may be full of options in attack, but it is in defence that Les Bleus are struggling.

William Gallas and Jean-Alain Boumsong have already been ruled out through injury, while Lilian Thuram, Sebastien Squillaci and Eric Abidal could also be absent.

That means two of Julien Escude, Gael Givet and Julien Rodriguez - all of whom are inexperienced at international level - could combine to form a makeshift centre-back partnership.

Roberto Ayala will be featuring in his 107th game for Argentina, making him their most-capped player.

'I never want to lose this feeling of pride I get when I put on the Argentina jersey,' the Valencia stalwart said. 'The young players ask me for my advice, but they are a lot more mature than I was at their age.'

Ayala's partner at centre-back will be Real Zaragoza's Gabriel Milito while, in attack, Hernan Crespo and Javier Saviola will link up.
