City's Onuoha facing another lengthy spell out

Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in training.

The England Under-21 international had only just forced his way back into the Blues side after struggling to overcome a long-standing hamstring complaint.

Now though, Onuoha has been condemned to another absence after injuring himself during an innocuous incident last Friday.

As yet, City are yet to discover the precise nature of the problem although manager Stuart Pearce is not expecting it to be a short-term.

'Nedum had scan on Monday that showed a reasonable amount of damage inside his knee but he will have to see a specialist before we find out the full extent of the damage,' Pearce told the club's website.

'It is a massive disappointment for the lad because I thought he was getting better and better as the games went by.

'It was just an innocuous challenge but he walked off the training pitch, tried to come back, then walked off again.

'There was not a great deal of pain there but when something like that happens, in the back of your mind, you know there is a problem.'

Depending on the severity of the injury, Onuoha's place in the England Under-21 squad for this summer's European Championships in Holland is at risk.

The injury certainly hampers Pearce in terms of City's defensive cover, especially as young centre-half Matthew Mills has been loaned to Colchester.

In addition to Onuoha, a long-term casualty Paul Dickov, Pearce will also be without Trevor Sinclair for another fortnight after suffering a torn groin muscle.
