Transfers: Clubs scramble to seal final deals

West Ham have signed Matthew Upson on the last day of the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old has agreed a four-and-a-half year contract, becoming Alan Curbishley's sixth signing during the month.

Birmingham had previously rejected bids of £4million and £6million for him but finally accepted an initial £6million with an additional £1.5million dependent on appearances.

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill secured the signature of Celtic forward Shaun Maloney for £1million with minutes to spare before the transfer deadline.

O'Neill raided his former club for the 23-year-old, who has agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Maloney's contract at Parkhead was due to expire in the summer and it had been reported he was seeking £20,000 in weekly wages to stay with Gordon Strachan's side beyond the end of the season.

Maloney won player of the season and young player of the season awards at Celtic last season, having successfully battled his way back from a serious knee injury.

O'Neill said, after his team's 3-1 defeat at Newcastle tonight: 'He is a player I obviously know a great deal about.'

West Ham are now set to lose Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano after FIFA ruled he could join Liverpool on loan.

However, the Reds were delayed in announcing that deal - despite having all the paperwork completed and in place - as the Premier League still had one or two issues to resolve.

There were no such hitches for the Reds in the signings of defender Alvaro Arbeloa from Deportivo La Coruna, for a fee believed to be £2.65million, and Malaga 18-year-old Francisco Manuel Duran.

Former Real Madrid player Arbeloa admitted the move to Anfield had taken him by surprise.

He told the club's website: 'Until yesterday I wasn't sure whether I was going to leave or not.

'My agent told me the deal was very advanced and I was then told that the deal had been reached between both clubs.

'For me this is a beautiful challenge and I hope everything goes well. It's a huge leap for me.'

Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson has moved from Portsmouth to Bolton for a nominal fee.

'I have been an admirer of David Thompson for some time. He has the ability to play at this level and will add competition for places in the critical midfield role,' said Bolton boss Allardyce.

'David is excited about the prospect of returning to the north west and helping us attain our goal of European qualification at the end of this season.'

Barclays Premiership bottom side Watford signed Istres midfielder Johan Cavalli and Creteil central defender Cedric Avinel, both on 18-month contracts, with Douglas Rinaldi joining on a six-month loan from Brazilian side Veranopolis EC and Leicester midfielder Gareth Davies agreeing a two-and-a-half-year deal.

As expected, Everton confirmed the signing of Portugal midfielder Manuel Fernandes on six months' loan from Benfica.

The 20-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at Portsmouth, where he made 12 appearances and scored one goal in the Carling Cup against Mansfield.

Manchester City drafted in their second player of the month by bringing left-back Michael Ball home to England for an undisclosed fee from Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.

Stoke captain Michael Duberry completed his move to Reading after the Royals invoked a clause in his contract that allowed him to join a Premiership club for a fixed amount, signing an 18-month deal for an undisclosed fee.

Tottenham's Reto Ziegler moved to Sampdoria on loan, with other temporary deals seeing Bjorn Runstrom move from Luton from Fulham, Geoff Horsfield from Sheffield United to Leicester and midfielder Simon Walton from Charlton to Cardiff.

Arsenal midfielder Sebastian Larsson made his loan at Coca-Cola Championship side Birmingham permanent in a £1million transfer on a four-year contract, while Blues also signed right-winger Pat Kavanagh, who was a free agent, on a six-month contract.

Elsewhere in the Coca-Cola Championship, former Manchester City striker Jon Macken left Crystal Palace for leaders Derby on a free transfer, with the Rams allowing Nathan Doyle to join Hull for an undisclosed fee.

Southampton completed a loan deal for Poland striker Marek Saganowski from French side Troyes, with Preston bringing in Brighton goalkeeper Wayne Henderson for a fee that could reach £200,000, and Genk's Gambian defender Seyfo Soley joining for an undisclosed fee until the end of the season.

QPR signed Nottingham Forest defender Danny Cullip for an undisclosed fee, while Norwich drafted in the unattached former Celtic young star Mark Fotheringham and Simon Lappin from St Mirren for an undisclosed fee.

Former Canaries captain Craig Fleming joined League One strugglers Rotherham on a free transfer, while Burnley striker Gifton Noel-Williams completed a £50,000 switch to Spanish second division outfit Real Murcia.

Struggling Southend bolstered their survival bid with the £200,000 signing of Motherwell's Ritchie Foran while West Brom offloaded goalkeeper Russell Hoult to Stoke.
