Transfers: Fernandes set for Everton loan move

Portuguese midfielder Manuel Fernandes will join Everton on loan until the end of the season, according to his club Benfica.

The 20-year-old, who had been on loan at Portsmouth for the first half of the season, has signed a new contract to stay at the Estadio da Luz until 2011.

``Benfica have reached agreement with Everton Football Club to loan Manuel Fernandes until the end of the season,'' said a statement on Portuguese club's website.

Hearts look set to part company with their two most marketable assets before tomorrow's transfer deadline.

Selling goalkeeper Craig Gordon and forward Paul Hartley is sure to prove deeply unpopular with Tynecastle fans but their past support of rebel former captain Steven Pressley alienated them from the hierarchy.

Hearts value Gordon, 24, at £10million but are unlikely to be that offered that and it is thought they may accept £6million for the pair.

Neither played in Saturday's Bank of Scotland Premier League draw at Rangers due to ongoing negotiations.

Fulham are one of several clubs interested in Gordon and as well as Hartley, 30, a third player, Czech striker Michal Pospisil, could also be leaving with Bristol City keen.

``The reality is that, as with Paul, I was told I wouldn't be playing because the club was in discussions with a view to my transfer,'' Gordon told the Edinburgh Evening Times of his absence at the weekend.

``It's nothing to do with a groin injury and they haven't told me who they are speaking with.''

Charlton have again insisted star striker Darren Bent will not be leaving the club this week.

The England forward has consistently been linked with a move away from The Valley but the Addicks are adamant the 22-year-old will not be heading elsewhere.

Charlton chairman Richard Murray told the club's website, www.cafc.co.uk: ``We've seen another batch of press speculation over the weekend, and the club has been inundated with journalists wanting to know how much we want and where he is going.

``Well, let's make this nice and simple - he's not going anywhere.''

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley, who signed Bent for Charlton during his time at The Valley, has denied he will attempt to take him to his new club.

Curbishley told the club's website: ``It was made quite clear to us by Charlton Athletic that the player was not for sale, and so that is the end of the matter.''

Newcastle are closing in on a loan deal for United States defender Oguchi Onyewu with the 24-year-old undergoing a medical on Tyneside yesterday.

The Standard Liege player, who featured in all three of the USA's matches in last year's World Cup, had attracted interest from across Europe - reportedly including Chelsea - but Newcastle seem to have won the race.

Troubled Wigan are hoping to strengthen by bringing in two African players in Nigeria striker Julius Aghahowa and Senegal midfielder Papa Bouba Diop.

Aghahowa, renowned for his flamboyant goal celebrations, is set to join for an undisclosed fee from Shakhtar Donetsk while manager Paul Jewell has also approached Fulham with regard to a possible Diop deal.

The Premiership's bottom club, Watford, are also on the trail of a defender, according to unconfirmed reports in South America.

The Hornets are reportedly set to sign Peruvian central defender Luis Alberto Guadalupe, 30, who is ready to leave homeland outfit Universitario.
