Benfica go second after win over Belenenses

LISBON, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Playmaker Rui Costa set up both goals to lead Benfica to a 2-1 away victory over Belenenses and into second place in the Portuguese Premier League on Saturday.

Captain Simao Sabrosa put Benfica in front after 13 minutes from inside the box after receiving a neat long pass by Costa. Brazilian defender Luisao doubled the score, heading in a free-kick by Costa after 37 minutes.

Belenenses midfielder Silas scored the consolation goal after 87 minutes from just outside the area. Belenenses captain Jose Pedro was shown a red card for a foul with a minute remaining.

Porto, who suffered their second league defeat of the season on Friday as they went down 1-0 at Uniao Leiria, remain top with 40 points from 16 matches. Benfica have 35 and Sporting 33.

The champions played the second half with 10 men after Ricardo Quaresma was sent off on the stroke of halftime for fouling French defender Tixier.
