Bayern playing hard-ball over Hargreaves

Manchester United's hopes of signing Owen Hargreaves this month are still foundering on Bayern Munich's determination to keep the England midfielder until the summer - despite a new reported £20million bid from the Red Devils.

Hargreaves, 26 on Saturday and out of action after breaking his leg last year, has confirmed United are once again trying to sign him.

Bayern, however, are showing no signs of softening their position.

Hargreaves told the BBC: 'It's been official today that Manchester United have made an offer for me.'

His German employers have nonetheless reiterated he will not be going to Old Trafford until the summer at the earliest - despite the reported €30 million bid (£19.7million) from United.

Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: 'It does not come into question. In the summer we will see how things work out.'

Lyon coach Gerard Houllier has confirmed he has made an inquiry about Aston Villa forward Milan Baros.

The Czech Republic international played under Houllier at Liverpool - but after a failed attempt to sign him in 2005, the Lyon coach had claimed he would drop his interest in the player.

Subsequently, however, he has told club website www.olweb.fr last night: 'Yes, I can confirm that I have seen Milan Baros' agent. Only fools never change their minds.'

Wigan manager Paul Jewell is adamant it would take an 'unbelievable offer' before he would even consider selling midfielder Lee McCulloch.

The Scotland international has handed in a transfer request and has been the subject of a bid from Rangers, but Jewell said: 'He can hand in 10 transfer requests - but until something is right for this club, then he won't be going.

'I spoke to Walter Smith on Thursday - and I'm disappointed the stuff (about the bid) came out earlier in the week.

'Rangers are denying it, and they are saying it's the agent - who incidentally is not his agent.

'I think Lee forgot to tell him he is contracted to somebody else until March.'

McCulloch, who signed a new three-year deal last summer, is represented by the Professional Footballers' Association.

However, it is John Viola who has this week been speaking on the player's behalf.

Light Blues boss Smith is determined to strengthen his squad before the window closes, with Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu reported to be another target.

'We are trying to bring a few players in. We will continue to try over the next week,' Smith said.

'People say the transfer window is a month, but it's not really; most clubs are loth to let players go too early in the transfer window, to see what's going to happen.

'We would hope that, amidst a flurry of activity next week, we would be able to get one or two other players in.'

Former Scotland defender Dominic Matteo has joined Stoke on a free transfer from Blackburn.
