Sir Alex 'expected' Beckham to go Stateside

David Beckham's move to United States has come as no surprise to Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former United star has signed a lucrative five-year deal with Los Angeles Galaxy and will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season.

Old Trafford manager Ferguson said: 'I anticipated that. It was to be expected he would go to America. Having played for us and deep down being a United fan he would not have come back to another English club.

'We wish him well - there are simple reasons I think! He was a terrific player for United. It is a big career change, playing for Real Madrid and going to America.

'His position at Madrid has probably accelerated the move.

'He has only played a few games this season and he cannot be happy with that. Every top player wants to play.'

Beckham's close pal Gary Neville believes the former England captain will try and leave his mark at Madrid in the final months of his contract.

United's long-serving defender said: 'I wish him all the best in everything he does. He is a great friend and this is another challenge for him.

'He has another six months left at Real Madrid and I am sure he will want to try and win something with them.

'After that he will head for America and having spoken to him I know he is looking forward to it. You need challenges in your life and he has a new one.

'David has always wanted to do things differently and in his own way. He has done it again.'
