Newcastle rule out move for Beckham

Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder has ruled out making a move for Real Madrid star David Beckham.

Uncertainty over the former England captain's future at the Bernabeu Stadium yesterday inevitably led to speculation that St James' Park could be a prospective destination.

However Roeder, who is currently engaged in the process of trying to draft in defenders and a striker during the January transfer window, was quick to counter the rumours.

He said: 'David Beckham is a fantastic player, but we are not and will not be involved in any negotiations to bring him to Newcastle United.'

Newcastle are perhaps best served in midfield where, when everyone is fit, they have Kieron Dyer, Scott Parker, Nicky Butt, Emre, James Milner, Nolberto Solano, Damien Duff and Charles N'Zogbia competing for places with youngsters Matty Pattison, James Troisi and Alan O'Brien waiting in the wings.

Roeder's big-money buys during the summer were 22-year-old striker Obafemi Martins and winger Duff, 27, players with years of their careers ahead of them.

The Magpies' willingness in the past to invest heavily in the best talent they can attract - they paid £17million to buy Michael Owen from Madrid - means they are always linked when a high-profile player becomes available.

However, expensive mistakes were made during Graeme Souness' ill-fated reign at St James' and the club is now looking for better a better return.

Meanwhile Roeder has played down suggestions that Inter Milan left-back Marco Andreolli is a target during the current window.
