Gordon fears Smith Scotland departure

Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon admits it would be 'very sad' for the national team if manager Walter Smith resigns to take charge at Rangers.

Smith and Ally McCoist are the firm favourites to be installed as the new Ibrox management team.

Smith, 58, has transformed Scotland's fortunes in his two years in charge, and they top their Euro 2008 qualifying group, ahead of Italy and France.

And Hearts stopper Gordon fears the worst if Smith is formally offered the chance to return to a club where he won seven league titles as boss before joining Everton in 1998.

Gordon told Sky Sports News: 'It would be a huge loss and disappointing. We've started so well and given ourselves a real chance of going on and possibly qualifying from such a difficult group.

'It's still going to be very difficult to qualify but after the start we've had we believe we're in with a chance.

'The fortunes of the national team really have changed around under Walter and his backroom team, and it would be very sad for us if he did go.'
