Pompey deny intrigue over director departure

Portsmouth insist there is no mystery behind vice-chairman David Chissick's decision to quit the Fratton Park board of directors.

Club owner Alexandre 'Sacha' Gaydamak's right-hand man and long-term business associate is said to want to dedicate more time to other business ventures.

Chissick was only appointed vice-chairman in September when Franco-Russian property magnate Gaydamak, 30, bought total control of the club from former chairman Milan Mandaric for an estimated £34 million.

Gaydamak had taken a half-stake in Pompey with a reported £16million investment the previous January.

Even Pompey manager Harry Redknapp, who dealt with Chissick on a regular basis at Pompey's training ground in Eastleigh, said he was 'surprised' by news of the director's resignation.

A statement on the club's official website said: 'David Chissick has resigned from his position as vice-chairman and director of Portsmouth Football Club.

'David has informed the board that he wishes to concentrate on his other business interests but wishes the club every success in the future and will remain an avid fan of Pompey.'

Chief executive Peter Storrie said: 'David has played an important role in a new era at Portsmouth and the club wish to thank him for his contribution to the business.

'The board of directors respect David's decision to dedicate more time to his other business ventures and the club wishes him every success in the future.'
