Sankofa appeal rejected by FA commission

Charlton's Osei Sankofa has had a claim for wrongful dismissal rejected by the Football Association's disciplinary commission.

The Charlton defender was sent off for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity during Tuesday's Premiership match against Arsenal.

The commission also decided that the claim was 'frivolous' and have given Sankofa an additional one-match suspension, meaning he will therefore miss the club's next two matches - Saturday's FA Cup third round tie at Nottingham Forest and the Premiership home match against Middlesbrough on January 13.

The commission have the power to extend a ban if they deem the claim to be frivolous - and any arguments by Charlton that Robin van Persie was offside when Sankofa carried out the offence were not relevant.

Earlier today, Nick Fenton of Grimsby had his appeal for wrongful dismissal against Stockport rejected - and also saw his suspension increased by an additional match due to a frivolous claim.

Sankofa found himself in trouble after 29 minutes at the Emirates Stadium, when Cesc Fabregas' drive from the edge of the penalty area deflected up onto the crossbar and back into the six-yard box.

Van Persie was all set to stab the loose ball into the open goal - only to be pulled over by Sankofa.

Referee Mike Riley had no hesitation in showing the young full-back a red card and pointing to the spot.

Henry stepped up to send Scott Carson the wrong way and net his eighth goal of the campaign.

Sankofa's suspension leaves Charlton short of cover at right-back, as skipper Luke Young remains sidelined. Matt Holland, who has taken on the captain's role, could be asked to fill in.
