Transfers: Taarabt and Alnwick head to Spurs

Tottenham manager Martin Jol has moved to freshen up his squad by bringing in young Sunderland goalkeeper Ben Alnwick and promising teenage midfielder Adel Taarabt from Lens.

Alnwick signed for £900,000 - although the fee could rise to £1.3million depending on appearances - with Spurs keeper Marton Fulop making his loan spell at the Stadium of Light permanent in a separate £500,000 deal.

'We are very pleased to bring another young and talented prospect to the club,' said Spurs sporting director Damien Comolli.

'Ben may only be 20 years old but he has significant international and Premiership experience.

'Ben showed great motivation and desire to join us and I know he is excited to be part of our future.'

The 17-year-old Taarabt, who has represented France at junior levels, will move to White Hart Lane on loan after his registration is sent from the French Football Federation.

'Adel is recognised as one of the best talents in Europe for his age group and as a club we're especially pleased that we beat several leading Premiership clubs to his signature,' Comolli told the club's website.

'He will be a healthy addition to the squad and is a continuation of our policy of attracting the best young talent as we constantly seek to improve the quality of the team both now and for the future.'

Wigan have opened talks with West Brom with a view to re-signing striker Nathan Ellington, according to the player's agent.

The 25-year-old played for the Latics between 2002 and 2005, scoring 67 goals in 145 games.

He moved to West Brom for £3million and it is reported that the same fee could bring him back to the JJB Stadium.

Ellington's agent Tony Finnigan told BBC Sport Online: 'Wigan have been in talks with West Brom and are interested in taking things further.'

Sunderland, meanwhile, have also signed Luton midfielder Carlos Edwards in a £1.4million deal, which could rise by £100,000 depending on appearances.

Edwards joined the Hatters in 2005 from Wrexham and played 74 times, scoring eight goals.

The 28-year-old also performed impressively for Trinidad and Tobago at last summer's World Cup.

Former Newcastle and Sunderland defender Robbie Elliott has made his emergency loan move to Leeds permanent.

The 33-year-old initially signed a short-term loan deal and made his debut for the Yorkshire club in the 2-1 New Year's Day victory over Coventry.

Leeds have also signed defender Matt Heath on a short-term contract.

Heath, 25, joined Leeds on loan from Coventry in November, although they have terminated the loan deal of striker Geoff Horsfield.

The 33-year-old was supposed to be with the Elland Road club until the end of the month, but manager Dennis Wise has allowed him to return to Sheffield United ahead of schedule.

Fulham goalkeeper Tony Warner and Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu have also returned to their parent clubs after their deals expired, while former Leeds captain Paul Butler, who had been on loan at MK Dons, has reached an agreement to terminate his deal at Elland Road, leaving him free to join another club on a permanent basis.

Former West Ham goalkeeper David Forde has signed for Cardiff from Eircom League club Derry City.

The Galway-born 26-year-old actually completed a successful medical and agreed personal terms with the Bluebirds in December but was forced to wait until the opening of the transfer window for the move to take effect.
