Mahjoub quits African Champions League finalists

TUNIS, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Coach Mrad Mahjoub, who took unfashionable Tunisian team CS Sfaxien to the African Champions League final, has quit seven weeks after their last-gasp defeat.

Mahjoub steered Sfaxien to a surprise top place in their group, including ending the long-standing unbeaten record on Africa soil of Egypt giants Al Ahli.

The club then beat Orlando Pirates of South Africa in the semi-finals to set up another two matches against Al Ahli in the final. They lost 2-1 on aggregate but only after the Egyptians scored a late winner in the second leg.

Sfaxien are in fifth place in the Tunisian league, seven points behind the leaders at the halfway point of the campaign. Mahjoub, an ex-Tunisian national coach, has been replaced at Sfaxien by caretaker Youssef El Baati, the club's website said.
