'Kiev defender set to join Blackburn'

Dynamo Kiev defender Andriy Nesmachnyi is to have a medical at Blackburn ahead of a proposed move to the Premiership club, according to the Ukrainian side's sporting director Leonid Buryak.

'Andriy left the club for England (on Tuesday morning),' Buryak said.

'He will undergo a medical examination at Blackburn after which the club will decide whether to buy him or not.'

The Ukraine international will spend a couple of days with the club ahead of a possible move.

Boss Mark Hughes revealed he became aware of Nesmachniy's qualities when he was in charge of Wales.

'I know of him as I have come up against him at international level and was impressed with him.'

'He can play wing back, he knows the game and has good football intelligence.

'Not only that, he has great experience with 60-odd caps for the Ukraine.

'It was made known to us he may be available to come in and have a couple of days training with us.

'We have taken up that option and will have a look at him. We may well do a medical anyway as it makes sense.

'It is always helpful if you can see someone at first hand rather than on videos. But it is no more than that at this stage.'

Nesmachniy's arrival could coincide with the departure of Lucas Neill who has been linked with a move to Liverpool in the transfer window.

Hughes said: 'We have to look at every eventuality and that is all we are trying to do.

'You have to try and forward plan. It may be that we don't have to take the option up.'

Hughes has not ruled out a move either for former favourite David Dunn.

The Birmingham midfielder has stated he would consider a move back to Ewood Park.

Hughes said: 'He is someone we know well and everyone has affection for David as a player and a person.

'But he is a player for another club and I am not at liberty to say what is revolving around him.

'All I will say is that if good players become available then we will look at every situation.'
