Hitzlsperger double sends Stuttgart through

BERLIN, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Thomas Hitzlsperger struck twice to lead VfB Stuttgart into the German Cup quarter-finals with a 4-1 victory at VfL Bochum on Tuesday.

Mario Gomez put Stuttgart ahead in the 34th minute before German international Hitzlsperger made the game safe with his two goals early in the second half.

Tommy Bechmann pulled one back for Bochum with five minutes to go but Cacau restored the three-goal advantage when he struck in the final minute.

Stuttgart are the biggest rivals to holders Bayern Munich, now that the likes of Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen are out of the competition. Bayern take on Alemannia Aachen in their third round match on Wednesday.

Hertha Berlin joined Stuttgart in the last eight with an equally comfortable 3-0 win at amateur club VfL Osnabrueck, Christian Gimenez getting two of the goals.

The other two Bundesliga sides also made it safely through after tougher contests against second division teams.

Eintracht Frankfurt beat Cologne 3-1 in extra time, after the match finished 1-1 over 90 minutes, while Nuremberg won 2-1 on penalties against SpVgg Unterhaching following 120 goalless minutes.

Bayern's all-first division clash with Aachen is the highlight of the four fixtures on Wednesday.

The quarter-finals will be played from Feb. 27-28.
