Melbourne secure A-League minor championship

PERTH, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Melbourne wrapped up the Australian A-League minor championship on Sunday with four rounds to spare after beating Auckland 4-0.

All four goals came in a 10-minute burst before halftime, with Danny Allsopp bagging a double and Adrian Caceres and Archie Thompson netting one each.

Melbourne's 13th win of the season lifted them to 41 points, 13 clear of second-placed Sydney with four games to go, and assured them of finishing on top of the regular season leading into the playoffs.

Sydney held on to second place with a 1-0 win at home to Perth, keeping them two clear of Adelaide who beat Newcastle 3-2 at home.

Central Coast were fourth on percentages over Newcastle despite losing to Queensland 3-2.

The top four teams will qualify for the playoffs which will decide the last two to play the grand final for the championship.
