La Volpe quits after play-off defeat

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Boca Juniors coach Ricardo la Volpe said he would resign after they lost 2-1 to Estudiantes in a playoff for the Argentine championship on Wednesday.

'These things happen in football,' La Volpe told the club's Web site. 'We didn't achieve what we had set out to. We got to this final but I have to present my resignation because we didn't reach our target.'

La Volpe, who coached Mexico at this year's World Cup, took over in September, inheriting a team that had won the previous two titles under Alfio Basile.

Boca missed out on a third successive title in dramatic circumstances. They finished level on points with Estudiantes after losing their last two games of the regular campaign and then went down in the playoff after taking an early lead.
