Warnock won't be splashing cash in January

Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock has warned fans he will not be spending silly money in next month's transfer window.

Warnock's hand was strengthened this week with the news the club are to raise £10million via a convertible loan notes issue, with £5million going towards new players.

With Warnock taking in two Champions League matches involving PSV Eindhoven and Bordeaux, as well as Anderlecht against AEK Athens, supporters can only hope of big names arriving at Bramall Lane.

The cash, though, is not just for a transfer fee as Warnock said: 'We've not got masses of money.

'What we're talking about include wages and agents' fees, so let's not kid ourselves we can spend three, four or five million pounds on a player.

'We have to be careful who we bring in, but at least I know I've got the backing, and that's nothing to do with this issue.

'I've always known (plc chairman) Kevin McCabe will support me as best he can. The loan notes is just another progressive step.

'When I spoke to Kevin a couple of weeks ago he was very positive.

'I told him what I'd like in January, and he knows I won't spend it if I don't think the players are better than what we have.

'I can't fault my players so far. We've played some good stuff at times, there's been great excitement, and we're in with a shout, which is all you can ask for at this moment in time.

'If we have to go with what we've got then we will, but we are looking to improve the squad, and hopefully there will be one or two new faces.'

United go into Monday's home clash against Aston Villa following back-to-back wins over Watford and Charlton, fuelling optimism they can avoid the drop.

Warnock knows fresh blood is required to provide further impetus, which is why alongside McCabe he watched three matches in three days.

Aside from the Champions League games, he also watched a Scandinavian Royal League clash in Sweden between Helsingborgs and Danish side Odense.

'It was a good experience for me,' added Warnock.

'I watched a number of games and players, made a number of contacts. It was a hard week.

'While the players were recuperating, it was the longest, hardest week I've had this year.

'There were a couple of positive things to come out of it, some things I'd not even thought about, and a couple of disappointments along the way. It was a bit of a mixture.

'But I've my eye on a couple of players, and if we are to do anything then hopefully we can sign them on a permanent basis.'

Claude Davis, Alan Quinn, Michael Tonge and Chris Armstrong are all back in training after recent injury problems and pushing for a place in the 16 to face Villa.
