Marioni strikes again as Toluca hold Guadalajara

MEXICO CITY, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Argentine striker Bruno Marioni scored his 13th goal of the competition as Toluca drew 1-1 at Guadalajara in the first leg of the Mexican championship final on Thursday.

Guadalajara, Mexico's most popular club and the only one not to field foreign players, enjoyed the better of the first half at the Jalisco stadium and went ahead when striker Omar Bravo headed in Ramon Morales's cross one minute before the break.

Bravo, one of several Mexican internationals in the Guadalajara team, took his tally to 10 goals.

The 26-year-old was also involved in the game's most controversial incident in the 11th minute when he appeared to be felled by Toluca goalkeeper Hernan Cristante but the referee waved play on.

Toluca, who won last year's Apertura championship under Argentine coach Americo Gallego, hit back in the 76th minute when Marioni, the championship's leading scorer, swept home Vicente Sanchez's cross at the far post.

'I think we did an intelligent job and made the most of the counter-attack,' said Marioni.

The fiery Gallego, a hard-tackling midielder in Argentina's 1978 World Cup winning team, was red carded for dissent and ordered from the dugout in the 66th minute and will have to watch Sunday's second leg from the stands.
