Sheringham expresses gambling concerns

Teddy Sheringham claims there is a gambling 'problem' in football and believes young players with plenty of leisure time are most at risk.

Paul Merson and Tony Adams are two players who have admitted to an addiction while they were at Arsenal.

Sheringham, himself a keen poker player, is concerned for young players who have time on their hands and insists they must be 'disciplined' if they are to succeed in football.

The West Ham striker said: 'It's a problem, especially for youngsters coming into the game.

'They have so much money and so much time on their hands that they don't know what to do with it.

'You must be disciplined. My main focus was on being a professional footballer.

'That's my main aim, always has been, which is why I don't concern myself with other things.'
