Suazo strikes as Colo Colo earn draw

MEXICO CITY, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Colo Colo striker Humberto Suazo struck his ninth goal of the competition as the Chileans held Mexico's Pachuca to a 1-1 draw away from home in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final yesterday.

Suazo collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and fired a low shot under goalkeeper Miguel Calero in the 51st minute after 17-year-old Alexis Sanchez had worked the opening by forcing his way past three defenders.

The Mexican champions had taken the lead in the 28th minute on the counter-attack.

Gabriel Caballero set Christian Jimenez free down the left and the Argentine crossed to the far post where Colombian striker Andres Chitiva headed home unmarked.

Pachuca had more possession but the team known as the Beavers struggled to create many openings until a later flourish.

Fernando Salazar was close with a dipping shot that Sebastian Cejas struggled to tip over, then Jaime Correa thumped a swerving 30-metre shot against the crossbar in the last five minutes.

Colo Colo are attempting to become the first Chilean side to win an international club competition since they lifted the Libertadores Cup in 1991.

Pachuca are attempting to become the first Mexican club to win a South American club competition, where teams from the country take part as guests.

The Sudamericana is the region's equivalent of the UEFA Cup. The second leg is in Santiago on Dec. 13.
