Rooney quizzed over 'nightclub brawl'

England striker Wayne Rooney was questioned by police today over an alleged brawl outside a nightclub.

The 21-year-old Manchester United star was interviewed by officers investigating claims that a photographer was assaulted outside Panacea in Manchester city centre on October 15.

He was interviewed at a police station in Greater Manchester and was questioned under caution but not arrested.

A spokesman for the force said a file would be passed to prosecutors to make the decision on possible charges.

He said: 'A 21-year-old man was interviewed today at a police station in Greater Manchester.

'He voluntarily attended and was interviewed in connection with an alleged assault on October 15.

'A file is now being prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service.'

The appointment for Rooney to attend was made after complaints from the photographer who claims he was attacked outside the club at around 5am.

He did not need medical treatment after the alleged assault, police said at the time.

The United squad trained as usual at Carrington this morning and Rooney later spoke to police at an unidentified police station.
