'There's a lot more to come from me' - Carrick

Michael Carrick insists he has much more to offer Manchester United.

The £18.6million summer arrival from Tottenham has been easing himself into life at Old Trafford.

Although Sir Alex Ferguson claims he has been delighted by Carrick's form so far, even the Red Devils boss admitted the England star has been overshadowed by the outstanding form of midfield partner Paul Scholes.

Carrick also feels he has adapted well to life in the Old Trafford spotlight but he knows there is much more in his locker.

'My first aim was to establish myself,' said the Wallsend-born star.

'Thankfully, I have been able to do that.

'There was always going to be a focus on me. At a big club like this, there were bound to be a lot of eyes on me wondering how I was doing.

'But I have to try to forget about that because I have a job to do.

'The longer it goes on, the better I will get because there is a lot more to come from me, I have no doubt about that.'

Carrick's assertion is good news given United will look to bounce back from their shock Champions League defeat to Celtic by beating Chelsea in their eagerly-awaited Premiership showdown at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ferguson has one major fitness doubt in Rio Ferdinand, who was hobbling as he left Parkhead on Tuesday, although at least in Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Mikael Silvestre, he has three obvious alternatives as a partner for Nemanja Vidic.

United's problems are in attack where, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sidelined by a hamstring injury, Alan Smith short on fitness and Giuseppe Rossi on loan at Newcastle, Ferguson has no cover for Louis Saha, whose confidence must have been dented by his last-gasp spot-kick miss in Glasgow.

With five goals in the Premiership this season, Saha has generally been in good form and is bound to keep his place in a starting line-up where, if Ferdinand is fit, the only major decision will be between Gabriel Heinze and Patrice Evra for the left-back berth.

The Red Devils are hardly lacking an incentive given a repeat of their victory in the corresponding fixture 12 months ago would see them open up a six-point lead on Jose Mourinho's men.

'It is good that we are able to look down on other teams, hopefully we can keep doing that for the rest of the season,' said Carrick.

'It is still tight but it is after we have got through Christmas and probably Easter when it will really start to get intense.'
