Mkhitaryan moves to Roma on season-long loan

Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has joined Roma on a season-long loan deal, the clubs announced.

The deal includes a fixed fee of €3 million for the 30-year-old Armenia international.

"It's a great opportunity for me to begin a new chapter with a great club," Mkhitaryan said.

"I know what this club is all about, and I am sure we can achieve great things together."

Having signed from Manchester United in a swap deal with Alexis Sanchez in January 2018, Mkhitaryan struggled to make an impact at the Emirates under Arsene Wenger or his successor, Unai Emery.

"Henrikh fits our desire to add players to the squad who can serve as examples to our younger players, and who have the technical quality to quickly adjust to Serie A football," Roma sporting director Gianluca Petrachi said.

Mkhitaryan came off the bench during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Tottenham at the Emirates, likely marking his final appearance in an Arsenal shirt.

Emery had made it clear to the former Borussia Dortmund player that he did not figure in his plans this season, and Mkhitaryan has now followed former Old Trafford teammate Chris Smalling to Rome on loan.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Roma have not secured an option to buy at the end of the season, but Mkhitaryan is likely to be made available for sale once the loan expires.
