Magnusson's plans for West Ham impress Pardew

Alan Pardew has spoken with enthusiasm about his meeting with Eggert Magnusson earlier this week as the West Ham boss looks to plot a long-term strategy to get into the Champions League.

Icelandic businessman Magnusson has been linked with a takeover at Upton Park, as has a consortium fronted by Kia Joorabchian, and Pardew believes either deal would benefit the club's ambitions.

The Hammers boss met Magnusson, who is also a UEFA executive committee member and head of his country's football association, on Tuesday and was impressed with his plans.

'It went very well,' Pardew said. 'West Ham fans would like to have heard the things he said to me - I think he has got a good concept of what he wants to do at the club.

'I have to say, coming out of it I was enthused, as I was when I met Kia. So the two potential owners of the club both have sound views on what they want to do.

'I'm all ears for that because I want to take this club forward, we want to try to compete in the Champions League and that is some distance away from where we sit right now.

'But as proved by other clubs, Aston Villa in particular, that takeover process when it is finished can take you forward very quickly.'

Despite their encouraging return to the top flight last season, West Ham are currently 16th in the Premiership and face a tough trip across London to face champions Chelsea on Saturday.

Talk of a takeover has been rife throughout a season when the Hammers struggled for form until recent wins against Blackburn and Arsenal, although they were beaten by Middlesbrough last time out.

Pardew would like a swift resolution to the possibility of a takeover, adding: 'It's the uncertainty of it which is slightly holding us back at the moment, whichever way it goes I just hope it gets done quickly.

'I think the existing board are perhaps looking at the potential bidders for the club and think maybe it's a better opportunity for West Ham if someone else carried that mantle. That's the suggestion.'

Pardew would like current chairman Terence Brown to remain at the club if a takeover is completed.

'I've had a great working relationship with Terry Brown, whatever happens to this club in terms of the takeover I hope he is kept on because he is an historian of the club,' said Pardew. 'He's seen lots of ups and downs and has a lot of experience which he can bring to a new board.'

Meanwhile, Pardew confirmed he has requested a personal hearing with the Football Association after being charged with improper conduct following his touchline clash with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Pardew said: 'One or two things have come through the post, and I'm absorbing all that. Am I going to appeal? Yes.'

Pardew is hoping to have Nigel Reo-Coker and Anton Ferdinand back against Chelsea after they missed the midweek England Under-21 friendly against Holland, and Bobby Zamora is expected to be fit despite not training with the first-team squad on Thursday.

James Collins is set to miss out, but Yossi Benayoun is fit despite featuring for Israel in their European Championship qualifier against Croatia.

'He was fine when he left us, he's carrying little knocks but nothing major, and he performed very well,' Pardew said.

'He's desperate to get them to qualify for the European Championships and his performance is what you'd expect from a Israeli captain. He'll be fit.'

Carlton Cole will be making a return to Stamford Bridge following his summer move across London, and the striker has been receiving text messages from his ex-team-mates telling him what to expect.

Cole said: 'It's going to be very special for me and it would be nice to play against my old pals.

'I've had a few abusive texts from some of the lads, it's all banter and mind games to get in each other ears.'
