Calderon hopeful Beckham will remain at Real

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon remains hopeful David Beckham will remain at the Bernabeu - despite admitting three new players are likely to arrive in January.

Teenage defender Marcelo was unveiled as a Real player today and will definitely be moving to the Spanish capital in the new year.

Calderon also revealed Madrid had reached agreements to bring Gonzalo Higuain and Fernando Gago to the club.

The only question to be resolved is when River Plate striker Higuain, 18, and Boca Juniors midfielder Gago, 20, come to the club - be it in January or next summer.

With former England captain Beckham already struggling to get into the first team, the arrival of three new additions could further diminish his chances of reclaiming his place.

Beckham, 31, has already revealed his frustration at being consigned to the bench this season, and it is believed he is waiting to see how that situation develops before deciding whether to sign an extension to his Real contract, which expires next summer.

However, Calderon said: 'We have offered a contract extension to Beckham. I have spoken to him personally.

'He is happy here, with his children's school, the climate ... but he is not playing and he wants to wait a little.

'He represents the claw, the (fighting) spirit of the club. I would like him to continue here.'

Regarding the impending arrivals of Higuain and Gago, Calderon said: 'Both have reached an agreement with us. The question is do they come in June or January. We want them to come in January and they also want that.

'In the case of Gago, he is going help a lot in the centre of the pitch. They say that he looks like (Josep) Guardiola and (Fernando) Redondo. He is going to help Guti a lot.

'We may have to play almost 70 games and it is necessary to create a big squad.'
