Another Magpie flies the nest as fitness coach quits

Newcastle have lost a fourth member of their backroom staff since the start of the season after fitness coach Paul Winsper announced he is to quit the club.

Winsper, who came to Newcastle from Durham County Cricket Club, follows assistant manager Kevin Bond, reserve-team coach Tommy Craig and physio Paul Ferris.

It is another blow for manager Glenn Roeder who is struggling to maintain stability after a shocking start to the season which has left the Magpies third from bottom of the Premiership.

Roeder has appointed Adrian Lamb from the club's academy to take Winsper's place.

The United manager told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle: 'Paul Winsper has decided that he needed a change and wanted his career to go in a different direction, and he leaves with our best wishes.

'I have worked with Paul since I came back to the club first as Academy director and now manager, and he is one of the most professional people I have ever worked with. We are all sorry to see him go.'

There has been some good news for Newcastle with Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins returning to training after missing the last five matches with a hamstring injury.

Martins, who has struggled to settle since moving from Italian side Inter Milan, hopes to be in contention for the trip to Arsenal at the weekend.

Roeder defended the striker, saying: 'Don't forget he was only 22 recently and he is still relatively young.

'He has come from a different league and a different culture, and we have to be more tolerant as far as he is concerned.

'Nobby Solano tells me it took him three or four months to settle in, while Thierry Henry did not have an immediate impact when he first joined Arsenal.

'But Arsene Wenger was patient with him - and the rest, as they say, is history. And when we go to the Emirates Stadium, in Henry we will be facing one of the three best strikers in the world today.

'Oba wants to play for us and wants to be out there at the Emirates Stadium.'
