AMSTERDAM, Nov 12 (Reuters) - PSV Eindhoven battled to a 1-0 win at Ajax Amsterdam to leapfrog the Dutch league leaders on Sunday.
Ajax dominated the match against their nemesis, who have now won eight of the last 11 meetings in Amsterdam, but had only one real chance when John Heitinga hit the side netting early on with a close-ranger header.
Midfielder Tim Simons turned the tide for PSV 18 minutes into the second half, heading home a free kick from Edison Mendez who was sent off on 71 minutes for a second yellow card.
'Ajax played a better first half as we were too restless on the ball but we straightened that out during the break,' PSV coach Ronald Koeman told Talpa TV.
'In the second half we were the better team and after the goal and the red card we defended well and came closer to a second goal then Ajax to an equaliser.'
PSV are top with 31 points after 12 matches, one above Ajax and two more then AZ Alkmaar, who beat Heracles Almelo 5-0 on Saturday.
In other action on Sunday, Feyenoord recovered from Wednesday's cup defeat when they won 5-3 at lowly Willem II Tilburg 5-3 to move fourth with 23 points.
Danny Schenkel struck in injury time to earn Sparta Rotterdam a 2-1 home win over ADO Den Haag, who dropped to last two points behind Sparta.
