Chelsea to face fine over yellow cards at Barca

UEFA are set to launch an investigation into last night's stormy encounter between Barcelona and Chelsea.

Italian referee Stefano Farina showed 10 yellow cards during the Champions League match - six to Chelsea players - and was confronted by furious Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard at the final whistle.

Chelsea can expect a fine for 'unsporting behaviour' - any team collecting more than five yellow cards in a match faces action - and Barcelona could find themselves in more serious trouble.

UEFA are waiting for reports from Farina and their match delegate Wolfgang Thierrichter to see if they mention Rijkaard's conduct - he had to be pulled away by Barca skipper Carles Puyol - or the Barcelona players' pressurising of the referee by surrounding him during the game.

UEFA communications director William Gaillard told PA Sport: 'We may open an investigation if there are a large amount of cards, if other incidents are mentioned by the referee or UEFA match delegate, or if either team files a complaint.

'We will examine the reports when we receive them and see if there is anything which would lead to an investigation being opened.'

The size of Chelsea's fine will also depend on the detail in the reports.

Barcelona could also be in trouble after their fans hurled bottles down on the Chelsea players as they applauded the travelling supporters in the top tier of the Nou Camp at the end of the 2-2 draw.

Blues midfielder Frank Lampard said: 'I knew things were raining down but none of them hit me. There was a bit of banter with the Spanish fans and that was good.'

It is understood that Chelsea are not considering making any complaint at this stage.
