Nike extends FC Barcelona sponsorship in $189M deal
BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Nike Inc. said Friday it has extended its sponsorship of the Barcelona soccer team another five years in a deal worth about $189 million.
The agreement with Futbol Club Barcelona includes a possible five-year renewal, which would further extend the relationship through 2018. Details were not disclosed.
The Beaverton-based athletic shoe and clothing giant has sponsored the Spanish soccer team -- nicknamed "Barca" -- since 1998. The team holds the UEFA Champions League title and has an estimated 70 million supporters worldwide.
One of the club's star players is two-time FIFA Player of the Year Ronaldinho, who is in his fourth season with the club.
"FC Barcelona is one of the game's best football clubs and one of the most exciting teams to watch," said Nike President and CEO Mark Parker.
FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta said the deal recognized both "our performance on the field and our social and community commitments."
