New Macclesfield man Ince calls on Gazza for help

Paul Ince has called on former England team-mate Paul Gascoigne to help him in a coaching role after taking over as player-manager at bottom of the Football League club Macclesfield.

The 39-year-old former England international yesterday signed a 14-month deal with the Football League's bottom club, which will then become a six-month rolling contract.

Now Ince has called on Gascoigne to join him as he bids to move the Silkmen from the bottom of the Football League, where they sit seven points adrift of second-bottom Boston.

Ince said: 'Paul is always welcome here. If he has any ideas he wants to pass, I'd welcome them. He has done some coaching before and I'd be interested in hearing his ideas.'

Ince may be starting his managerial career at the bottom with Macclesfield but he is making no secret of his ambition to manage in the Premiership.

Ince hopes to appoint an assistant with vast experience of lower-league football but he is not able to play himself until January.

Known as a competitor on the pitch in a career that saw him turn out for Manchester United, Inter Milan and Liverpool, Ince is adamant he will have the same attitude as a manager and wants to reach the very top.

He said: 'Obviously I'd like to manage in the Premiership. I was the first black England captain and it would be nice to be one of the first black Premiership managers.

'Sir Alex Ferguson always said you have to have high standards and that's what I've got.'

He added: 'It's important that you learn what it's like in the lower leagues and that's what I intend to do.

'You're putting yourself up there to be shot at and that's what I like about it.

'Football's given me a great life and I'd hate to walk away and not try being a manager and, now I've got the chance, and I'm very excited about it.

'It's a massive challenge because of the situation the club's in but I wouldn't have taken this on if I didn't think we could get out of it.'

Ince's first task is to revive a team that has yet to win this season and sits bottom of the Football League with five points from 15 matches, with the lowest average attendance of the 92 league clubs.

If he is a success, his profile guarantees he will attract interest from far bigger clubs, a situation Macclesfield chairman Rob Bickerton accepts.

Bickerton said: 'He's told me he wants to manage at the highest level and it's fair to say Macclesfield will not be at the highest level.

'If we can help him achieve his aims then that will undoubtedly help us achieve our aims so we'll be good for each other.'
