Nacional ask for postponement after mumps outbreak

MONTEVIDEO, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Uruguayan champions Nacional asked for Thursday's Copa Sudamericana match with Argentina's Boca Juniors to be postponed on Monday after being hit by a bout of mumps.

'We're in an emergency situation because, apart from the proven cases of the illness, we think some more could appear and this causes uncertainty,' club director Carlos Rodriguez Batlle said in a radio interview.

Nacional, who are due to play the second round second leg in Buenos Aires on Thursday, said goalkeeper Jorge Bava, defender Ignacio Pallas and forward Rodrigo Castro had gone down with the illness.

They believe at least five other players could be affected.

Coach Martin Lasarte said the infection could have been spread by the practice of drinking 'mate', a herb tea popular throughout Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil.

The tea, served in a metal or wooden gourd, is customarily shared between several people, who all drink from the same metal straw.
