Van Bommel frozen out by Van Basten regime
AMSTERDAM, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich midfielder Mark van Bommel will not play for the Netherlands under the present coaching regime, the Dutch FA said on Sunday.
Van Bommel was included in Marco van Basten's squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Bulgaria on Oct. 7 and Albania four days later, but pulled out on Sunday.
In a statement the Dutch FA said that Van Bommel informed the technical staff that he will no longer play for the Dutch team under the present regime.
Striker Ruud van Nistelrooy's immediate international future also looks bleak after he was not called into the squad to replace the injured Ajax forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
Van Basten said he had spoken to the Real Madrid striker but said there was 'insufficient confidence' on both sides for the former Manchester United player to return to the squad.
'We took notice of Van Bommel's decision and have to respect it. We will not call any replacement for Van Bommel and Huntelaar. From Tuesday we will focus on the coming two important matches,' said Van Basten in a statement.
