Hammers to get back to basics in Palermo

West Ham manager Alan Pardew admits he needs to find the right balance in his squad to get back on the winning track.

The Hammers have not won since the opening day of the season and face a tough task to stay in the UEFA Cup after losing 1-0 in the first leg of their first-round tie with Palermo.

Looking to overturn the deficit in Italy tonight, Pardew said: 'We need to get back to what we are about.

'All of us, we have to look at the whole group and how the team selection, the balance of the team, individual players, the staff make sure that we're all looking and focusing on the same result.'

West Ham's squad has been bolstered by the arrival of Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez, although they have not won since the Argentina duo were signed.

Pardew added: 'I've got to be honest - as I sit here today I know I'm in a strong position in terms of the squad.

'It's a very strong squad, fantastic talent among it and we just need to harness it and make sure that we're getting the right results. It's a results business.'

Pardew is looking for a similar performance to last season's victory at Highbury when Arsenal were defeated 3-2.

He added: 'It's difficult to put Palermo into context because we've run into the form team in Serie A - a team on the up.

'They will take a lead into the game. That is a tough match for us. We'll have to put in the magnitude of the performance we did against Arsenal last year to get through it. We're capable of that.'

Pardew insists talks of a takeover at the club have not distracted West Ham players from tonight's task.

He said: 'We need to put in a performance that shows there is no problem is here because once you get just a couple of defeats the press, media and even the fans and people close to the club could suggest there is disruption. That's not true.

'We've put in a couple of below-par performances - the second half against Newcastle and first half against Villa.

'Otherwise we've been pretty close as far as I'm concerned. But we need to prove that by getting a result and putting in 90 minutes.

'Then we can get some of the silly stuff that's been floating about to bed.'
