BERLIN, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Hamburg SV's Iranian defender Mehdi Mahdavikia will be banned for three matches and fined 5,000 euros ($6,387) for his foul on Werder Bremen's Diego, the German Football Association (DFB) said on Monday.
Mahdavikia was sent off in the 73rd minute of Saturday's 1-1 draw for an ugly and late challenge on the Brazilian, who was not seriously injured and should be fit to play against Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Hamburg have yet to win in the Bundesliga this season and are in 14th place with four points from five matches.
Saturday's match is likely to bring them further trouble from the DFB. The game was briefly held up when some fans threw lighters at Werder goalkeeper Tim Wiese.
According to one newspaper report on Monday, a small glass bottle was also thrown at the keeper.
