Staunton promotes McShane into Euro 2008 squad

DUBLIN, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Ireland manager Steve Staunton has promoted under-21 international Paul McShane into a 25-man squad for next month's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Cyprus and Czech Republic.

The West Bromwich Albion defender joins Preston North End defender Sean St Ledger as the only uncapped players in the squad.

'We are developing a team for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign and I want players like Paul battling to be part of that,' Staunton said in a statement on the FAI website.

'While we want to win every game and will be trying hard to qualify for Euro 2008, the main priority is building a squad capable of mounting a serious challenge in two years' time.'

Charlton Athletic winger Andy Reid and Ipswich Town striker Alan Lee, who missed the game against Germany earlier this month, have been recalled.

Goalkeeper and vice-captain Shay Given is ruled out after bowel surgery following an injury during a Newcastle league game against West Ham.

'Shay is a big loss but this is a chance for the other goalkeepers to show what they can do in a competitive international,' Staunton said.

Staunton will watch the Cyprus game from the stands after UEFA gave him a one-match touchline ban after he was dismissed during Ireland's 1-0 defeat by Germany in their Euro 2008 Group D qualifier.

Staunton was sent from the bench after 76 minutes for 'constantly protesting against the decisions of the referee'.

Ireland are away to Cyprus on Oct. 7 and host the Czechs four days later.
