Bundesliga: Bayern clinch comeback win, go top

BERLIN, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich came from behind to beat Alemannia Aachen 2-1 on Saturday and sneak into top spot in the Bundesliga for at least one night.

Sascha Dum's deflected strike gave Aachen an unexpected lead in the 38th minute at the Allianz Arena but Claudio Pizarro equalised within a minute and Mark van Bommel struck the winner 10 minutes after the break.

Hertha Berlin, who went into the fifth round of matches as leaders, could only manage a 1-1 draw away to Mainz. Schalke took advantage to join Bayern at the top with a 2-0 win at home to VfL Wolfsburg.

The big northern battle between Hamburg SV and Werder Bremen, two Champions League teams struggling for form, finished 1-1.

Tim Borowski put Bremen ahead in the 58th minute. Bastian Reinhardt headed an equaliser 11 minutes later and Hamburg held on despite having Mehdi Mahdavikia sent off with 16 minutes to go.

That left Bayern top with 10 points from five games, ahead of Schalke on goals scored.

Hertha and Borussia Moenchengladbach, who beat Borussia Dortmund on Friday, have nine points.

Nuremberg, with eight points from four games, will go top on Sunday if they win away to Energie Cottbus.

Bayern had taken just a point from their previous two league games and their bad run looked set to continue when they fell behind in a poor first half.

Dum took a free kick on the very edge of the area and his blast struck Lucio and flew past Oliver Kahn.

In response, Bastian Schweinsteiger raced forward and won a corner on the Bayern left. Aachen cleared it for a second corner and this time Pizarro outjumped his marker and butted the ball in.

Bayern improved slightly after the break and took a lead they just about deserved when the ball broke for Van Bommel outside the area and the Dutch international threaded in a shot and make it two goals in two Bundesliga games following his move from Barcelona.

It was just the result Bayern needed ahead of their trip to face Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.

A 1-1 draw suited neither side in the northern derby.

Hamburg, who are in 14th place with four points, have still to win this season and are in sorry shape as they prepare to play away to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Werder, who host European champions Barcelona on Wednesday, at least managed to bring to an end their four-match losing run in all competitions. They are in eighth place with seven points.
