Platini calls for open Champions League competition

PARIS, Sept 21 (Reuters) - UEFA presidential candidate Michel Platini has stated his determination to support a Champions League open to all Europe's clubs.

'It is up to us today to consolidate (the Champions League) in the face of the threat to its future posed by the prospect of a European super-league modelled on the American NBA,' Platini told the presidents of UEFA's member federations in a letter on Thursday made available to Reuters.

The former France captain, who won the European Cup with Juventus, referred to the threat posed by the G14 group of leading European clubs to create a competition separate from UEFA.

'My position in this matter is simple and clear: yes to an open Champions League, no to a closed pseudo-NBA,' Platini wrote, referring to the U.S. basketball competition.
