Greece: Ionikos miss chance to top Super League

ATHENS, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Athens-based Ionikos missed the chance to take over at the top of the Super League when they lost 1-0 at Aris on Saturday.

A victory would have given them a one-point lead over Olympiakos Piraeus, who visit OFI Crete on Sunday still two points clear with nine points from their three games.

Ionikos, whose shock win over Panathinaikos in round two helped persuade the Greens to axe coach Hans Backe on Friday, looked set for a draw until Brazilian Rogerio Belem grabbed the winner for the home side two minutes from time.

The win saw Aris moved up five places to fifth with six points from four games while Ionikos slipped a spot to third.

In Saturday's other game, PAOK beat visiting Ergotelis 1-0 with a goal from former Panathinaikos midfielder Costas Haralambidis two minutes after halftime.

The win took PAOK above Ionikos as they jumped seven places to second with seven points from four matches.

Fourth-placed Panathinaikos, looking for their fifth coach in two years following the dismissal of Backe, visit Panionios on Sunday while AEK Athens host Iraklis on Monday.
