Ex-Czech manager Uhrin takes charge of Dinamo Tbilisi

TBILISI, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Former Czech Republic manager Dusan Uhrin signed a two-year contract to coach Georgian first division club Dinamo Tbilisi on Saturday.

'Dinamo Tbilisi have been one of the most famous clubs in the former Soviet Union and I've followed them since their heyday a quarter of a century ago,' Uhrin told reporters.

'They've always been a big club, although they've had some problems in the last couple of years. But hopefully together we can revive some of the former glory.'

Uhrin, a well travelled 63-year-old, has coached clubs and national teams in Sweden, Kuwait and his native Czech Republic.

His most memorable achievement to date was leading the Czechs to the final of Euro 96, where they lost to Germany.

He was sacked as Kuwait manager in February 2001 after a 1-0 defeat by Bahrain ended their hopes of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup finals.

Uhrin guided Sparta Prague to league titles in 1992 and 1993 and to the European Cup semi-finals in 1992 and also coached AIK Stockholm for a few months in 2002.

Dinamo Tbilisi's greatest triumph came in 1981 when they won the now-defunct European Cup Winners' Cup. But they have been struggling for form under caretaker coach Kakhaber Kacharava.

Georgia's most successful and popular club with 12 national titles since 1990, are in sixth place in the 14-team first division five games into the new season.
