Serie A: Milan, Inter off to winning start

AC Milan made a good start to their initial task of overturning an eight-point match-fixing penalty by fending off a late Lazio comeback to record a 2-1 victory in the first game of the new season.

Filippo Inzaghi and new signing Ricardo Oliveira, touted as Andriy Shevchenko's replacement, had given Milan what seemed like an unassailable lead with strikes either side of half-time. But when Stephen Makinwa clawed one back with 17 minutes remaining, it set up a frantic finale.

Lazio, who themselves began the season with an 11-point penalty for their part in the scandal, surged forward but could not find an equaliser.

Internazionale, who were crowned champions last season as a result of Milan and Juventus' misdemeanours, beat Fiorentina 3-2 in Florence - Esteban Cambiasso scoring twice for the Nerazzurri - while on Saturday goals from Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Mancini gave Roma a 2-0 win at home to Livorno.

Elsewhere today, Siena opened their season with a 2-1 win over 10-man Chievo, Atalanta made a triumphant return to Serie A with a 3-1 home victory over Ascoli, Catania beat Cagliari 1-0 and Messina matched that score against Udinese.

Empoli were 2-1 victors at Sampdoria, Torino drew 1-1 at home to Parma, while Rolando Bianchi scored a hat-trick for Reggina but still found himself on the losing side as hosts Palermo won a thrilling game 4-3.
