Wigan wanted Windass claims Bradford chairman

Bradford turned down another offer from Premiership club Wigan for veteran striker Dean Windass on transfer deadline day, according to the League One outfit's chairman Julian Rhodes.

Wigan manager Paul Jewell, who has now tried to sign the evergreen 37-year-old three times, had a verbal bid of £500,000 turned down, says Rhodes.

'Wigan contacted me with an offer, which I turned down,' said the Bradford chairman, who is currently on holiday in Jersey.

Windass, who turned down a move to the JJB Stadium in the summer of 2005, was 'disappointed' not to have been informed of the Latics' approach until Rhodes had flatly rejected them.

Jewell has long been an admirer of Windass and first tried to lure him to Wigan when the burly forward was at Sheffield United in 2003, but he opted for a switch to Valley Parade instead.

Windass, who hit 20 goals in all competitions last season and finished joint-top scorer with 27 goals in Coca-Cola League One the campaign before, is under contract at Bradford until the end of next season.

He signed a 12-month extension to his current deal following Wigan's bid to sign him a year ago.
