Fulham boss Coleman hints at January transfers

Fulham boss Chris Coleman has hinted at further moves into the transfer market when the window opens again in January.

Coleman revealed his intent to do more business after landing experienced goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka on a season-long loan deal from Shakhtar Donetsk and Wayne Routledge from capital rivals Tottenham on a similar arrangement.

Coleman, who allowed French midfielder Steed Malbranque to join Spurs in a deal thought to be worth around £2million to the Cottagers, now believes he has the squad which can prove it is good enough to secure a top 10 place.

Coleman declared: 'We're happy with the business we've carried out this transfer window. We missed out on another player who we were quite confident of signing, but we couldn't get him.

'I'm happy with this squad and come January, depending on how we're doing, we could see a bit more movement.

'With the squad we've got now, I think we've got a good chance to prove that we're good enough to be in the top half of the table.'

Coleman was particularly pleased to land Lastuvka and Routledge and maintained that Malbranque's departure was good for all concerned.

'Jan's got good experience and has represented his country,' said Coleman. 'He's a good, young keeper and is very well regarded.

'He's here for the year's loan and will be in good company with Antti Niemi and Mark Crossley. We lost Tony Warner and Jaro Drobny, so we needed to add another quality keeper.

'Antti's 35 and Mark's 38 so we needed to bring in some youth to complement the experience we've already got in that position.

'Everybody remembers Wayne from his time at Palace. He's a very dangerous right-sided player with plenty of pace. We've got to be patient with him because he's missed a lot of football, he had an injury at Tottenham and he went on loan to Portsmouth last season where he also got injured.

'When he was at Palace, he played every Premiership game for them and we'll be looking to get him back to that level and beyond. He's got great potential and he will balance us nicely down the right hand side.'

Malbranque, who is understood to have fallen out with Coleman, is currently out of action with a groin problem. He is not expected to make his Spurs debut for at least another two months but Coleman hinted that the deal was the perfect solution for everyone.

Coleman added: 'The recent situation wasn't good for the club or the player, he's gone to Tottenham and I think the move was in the best interest of all parties.'

Lastuvka is delighted to get the chance to play in England and the 24-year-old now wants to challenge Niemi for the number one spot in the side.

Lastuvka said: 'It is a big call for me. I have always wanted to play in England and, suddenly, that has happened. I am looking forward to it very much.

'To be honest, I don't know much about the club yet. Of course I know this season's results and I know which goalkeepers are there.'

Lastuvka's loan deal means he will not feature for Shakhtar in this season's UEFA Champions League but the keeper does not feel he is missing out.

He added: 'I don't take it as a tragedy. I have always dreamt of England so now it will be a kind of Champions League for me. I want to gain ground and I will do everything to make it.'
