Wigan have completed the signing of Bristol City forward David Cotterill for a fee of around £2million.
The Latics confirmed they had brought the 18-year-old Welsh international to the JJB Stadium with less than two hours to go before the end of the transfer window.
Manager Paul Jewell told the club's official website: 'He is a player we have been monitoring for some time and we have decided to act now.
'David is one of those players who I think has the ability to make the grade in the Premiership, which is why we've decided to take him.
'He is very quick but he is also very hungry to learn and has a great attitude.'
Earlier in the day, Norwich had hoped they would land the sought-after youngster, having put together a similar deal with Bristol City.
However, despite Cotterill going as far as to agree personal terms and passing a medical with the Coca-Cola Championship side, Wigan's interest lead to the player switching his focus to a chance in the top flight with the Latics.
