Lee denies religion scuppered Roma move

Tottenham's South Korean defender Lee Young-Pyo has denied his decision to pull out of a move to Roma was related to his religious beliefs.

Reports in Korea following the collapse of the deal suggested the 29-year-old former PSV Eindhoven defender had changed his mind as a result of his devotion to his Christian faith.

However, Lee dispelled the rumours upon his arrival at Incheon airport today as he returned for South Korea's Asian Cup qualifying match against Iran on Saturday.

'The reasons are personal but it had nothing to do with religion at all,' he said. 'I didn't even think about religion once. I don't know how those rumours started.

'Like any player in the world, I was attracted to the idea of playing for a great club such as Roma. At the end, I considered and deliberated over everything before making my final decision.'

Lee will remain at White Hart Lane for the foreseeable future and is confident he has made the right choice.

'To give up going to Roma was a decision that needed courage,' he said. 'In the past, I have made big decisions that needed a lot of thought, as was the case this time.'
